Lincoln parks make a great venue for couples opting for outdoor weddings, and a great option for our list of Lincoln wedding venues. Lincoln Parks and Recreation say weddings typically are held every weekend in warmer months.
As one might guess, the most popular park in Lincoln in which to get married is Sunken Gardens in the central part of the city. This is a gorgeous setting in the late spring through fall as there are colors galore. Park staff and volunteers participate in the “wake up the beds” event in May, planting a variety of colorful annuals. Don’t go in May expecting to see color, however, as it takes awhile for those plants to start growing. Look for the beauty in mid-June, just as wedding season gets in full gear.
Park staff members say Sunken Gardens is the site of numerous weddings. For a three-hour rental, the cost is $150. A damage deposit is $100. Staff will inspect the park after the wedding to make sure there is no damage to flowers, so you don’t want to smash them down during the photography session or any other event as you may lose some of your deposit.
Another popular wedding site is the columns area at Pioneer Park. Look up Lincoln wedding photography online and you are bound to see some photographs taken at the columns. It’s not just a popular place for wedding photography, but for senior and family photography as well. It’s that gorgeous of a spot. The columns make a beautiful backdrop for a wedding, and the concrete platform works well for a wedding ceremony.
The cost for a three-hour rental at Pioneers Park is $100 and the same $100 damage deposit applies.
There’s plenty of other options as well. Stransky Park at 17th and Lake streets is a small but lovely area for a wedding, and more couples are realizing this as it’s become a popular spot for nuptuals.
A couple of spots in northwest Lincoln are often chosen for weddings. The island at Oak Lake Park makes another suitable wedding venue, as does Bowling Lake Island near Lincoln’s Air Park area.
Other commonly chosen spots include the Holmes Lake observatory and Hazel Abel Park at 17th and E streets.
If you’re thinking about just showing up at a park and having a wedding, think again. It’s important to notify Lincoln Parks and Recreation so they can reserve the spot for you. Groundskeepers also will make sure the spot is mowed so that it looks nice.
The parks department will not reserve two weddings at the same location on the same date. Reservations are made early, as much as a year ahead. The department asks wedding parties to be respectful of others at the park, and if they want to be heard, it’s advisable to bring a public address system as it won’t be supplied.
