Welcome to my blog. On this page you will find articles I personally write about the photography industry and my work. You will also see blogs showing the photos from many of my photo sessions.
Adding props to a photo session is something most people may not think about. Props, however, can add a lot of flair to your photos. They are especially helpful in photos meant to show the personality of the person being published, like a high school senior or a child.
For example, a child involved in baseball may want to pose with a baseball bat or mitt. I once photographed a high school senior who was on her school’s softball team, so we went to the ballpark and she hit a few balls while I photographed her. I also had her pose with the bat.
Here are some tips for the best way to use props during your photo session.
Don’t look dated
Don’t pick a trendy prop that will look out of date in 20 years. Choose something classic. The baseball bat, for example.
Go easy
Don’t come up with some elaborate idea for a theme or props that will be difficult to actually pull off. Before you decide to remake your favorite movie scene, make sure that you will be able to find suitable clothing for everyone in the photo. In other words, make it as easy as you can while still being creative.
Size matters
You want your prop to enhance your photo, not overwhelm it. Putting a car in the photo can be very cool, but avoid super large props that may detract from you as the subject.
Special meaning
Try to find props that have special meaning to the person in the photo. For example, maybe your child has a favorite stuffed animal that will be super cute in the photo. A musical instrument may have special meaning to someone and look great in the photo.
Use what is available
The seasons can work well. In the fall, use the leaves that have fallen to the ground as your props. In the winter, snow can be a beautiful prop. These natural props can make some amazing photos.
Remember, props can be the perfect addition to your photos, but make sure they don’t become the main focus.
