Weddings and Doorstep Diner Catering were words never spoken in the same sentence when Jeff and Laurie decided to start a catering company.
The plan for Doorstep Diner was to bring food to your doorstep. Jeff and Laurie planned to take orders from Lincoln residents, cook them a meal and deliver it.
When someone asked them if they would cater their wedding their first thought was – no, we don’t do wedding catering. After thinking about it, they asked themselves why they couldn’t cater a wedding. They decided to give it a try.
Now Doorstep Diner has become one of the premier wedding caterer businesses in Lincoln. The business recently was named best wedding caterer in the Lincoln Journal Star’s Lincoln’s Choice Awards for the second consecutive year.
The business has grown organically. Jeff and Lori added a third partner, Chad Klein, who serves as chief operating officer, and roughly half a dozen full- and part-time employees. In 2018 the business catered a wedding nearly every weekend of the year.
It has a full slate of weddings in 2019 and is booking into 2020, Chad says.
Doorstep Diner Catering takes pride in the fact that the owners do all they can to give their clients what they want. One client asked for Korean Bulgogi tacos – a dish the owners were not familiar with. They figured out how to provide it, and now it’s one of their most popular dishes.
Another couple had a rockabilly-themed wedding and asked for a non-traditional menu including burger sliders, cheese frenchies and tater tots. Doorstep Diner Catering not only provided the menu but workers at the wedding dressed in rockabilly costumes.
The most popular offering is the simplistic buffet, which includes two entrees, two sides, a salad and dinner roll, Chad says.
Prices for Doorstep Diner meals start at about $12 per person.
Last summer the company started leasing a space in front of its kitchen that was sitting empty and uses it for rehearsal dinners. Couples who book Doorstep Diner as their wedding caterer get free use of the room. They can choose what food they want to order and can bring in their own alcohol. The space is called The Event Space at 5550 and is located at 5550 S. 59th St. Ste. 10A.
