The new trend in wedding photography: Micro Weddings

One of the results of the Covid-19 crisis has been smaller weddings. And in my opinion, more couples are beginning to think this is ok. The result is a trend toward micro weddings.

I heard a story on the radio just this week about a couple who decided against the large, expensive wedding and instead put the money they would have spent toward a down payment on a house. When you think about it – it’s a great idea.

Little girls have long grown up imagining their wedding day. As a result, brides often think that their wedding has to be a big bash, which results in a big bill. Some weddings have several hundred guests invited to a beautiful reception venue – and each person gets a meal. The total bill is exorbitant.

Due to Covid-19, large weddings have pretty much not happened this year. Some couples are delaying their weddings but many are going ahead with them and making them smaller and more intimate. As a result, weddings cost less and take less time.

That means wedding photographers often don’t need to be hired for a full day.

I’ve had more what I would call micro wedding jobs in the last two years than I ever have. This year it was especially common with the virus causing couples to have to make big changes to their wedding.

For many, once they make these changes they realize the purpose of the day is not necessarily to have a big party, but to get married. Couples can get married with hundreds watching or fewer than 10 watching.

With smaller weddings becoming more common, I am booking more micro wedding photography jobs for a lot less than my normal starting 8-hour package. This year I have had weddings where I was there for just two hours or four hours. The difference in hours will result in a lower cost for the photographer – at least in my case.

Couples can still get great wedding photos at micro weddings. It’s still very important to hire a professional for the day because you will want those great photos.
