Do you need a wedding album?

When I was younger, the whole purpose of getting wedding photos taken was to get your photo album. The trend these days seems to be not ordering an album.

I know this isn’t the case with many wedding photographers. Many still not only offer their albums to their customers but heavily promote them to their customers. I’ve seen photographers at bridal fairs showcasing numerous photo books at their table.

My experience with the couples whose weddings I photograph is the interest in photo albums just isn’t there. I don’t get asked for them, nor do I get asked about them. Brides and grooms are most interested in their digital images. Do they take these images and make their book? I don’t know. No one shares with me the plans for their digital images.

I think the question to ask is this: do you need a wedding album? Photo albums are great keepsakes and remembrances from the big day. They are great ways to show your wedding photos to others. Wedding albums look great on a coffee table or even on a shelf. Years down the road, it probably will be easier to view your wedding photos in an book rather than on a flash drive. Flash drives don’t last forever, and they are easily lost.

Albums, though are expensive. At the very least, expect to pay several hundred dollars. Photographers that don’t charge extra for an album undoubtedly have it built into the price. And I can hear the argument against them now — once you have it you will look at it once and put it away, seldom to look at it again.
