Postponed wedding? Here are some options

If you are one of the countless couples whose wedding is being interrupted by Covid-19, what do you do? I can’t answer that for you, but I will offer a few suggestions for postponed weddings.

First and foremost, decide if you still want to get married on your designated date. You are still allowed to do that, even though you likely can’t have the wedding you envisioned. Many couples are opting to go ahead with the wedding with a very small number of people watching. At least they will still be married, and that’s the whole purpose, right?

If you do choose this option, this doesn’t mean you can’t have a big party later on. Two of the weddings I had scheduled in the first half of 2020 are doing this. The couples are still getting married and have plans for a second ceremony with a reception later on. This will give them the wedding day they envisioned while still allowing them to get married when planned.

And if you choose this option and decide to have a ceremony later, you can still capture the day in pictures. Many photographers, myself included, will still attend the small wedding and take photos. I have a wedding in May that falls into this category. The couple is still getting married, and I will take photos of the pre-wedding, the ceremony and the formal portraits. This will be the second time this year that I will do this and it may not be the last. I will make myself available for situations like this.

Another option is just to postpone everything to a later date. The trick for postponed weddings is choosing the date. Finding a date where all your chosen vendors are available may be difficult. You may lose money on deposits given to vendors hired for the first date. And – who knows whether the new date will be a date that the virus will not interrupt.

The third option is to go off and elope. Again you can have your reception later on.
