Welcome to my blog. On this page you will find articles I personally write about the photography industry and my work. You will also see blogs showing the photos from many of my photo sessions.
I love pets, so it was natural that when I took up photography that I would take a lot of pictures of pets. I have more pictures of my dogs than I know what to do with. Some people have pictures of their kids on their phones. I have pictures of my dogs on my phones.
So, when deciding to enter the photography business it was a no-brainer to promote myself as a pet photographer. There are a lot of photographers in the business but I don’t think many of them consider themselves a pet photographer.
One challenge of pet photography is the subjects themselves. They don’t understand what you are doing. They don’t listen when you tell them to sit still and smile. They continually want to wander off and sniff. I am finding I need to take a ton of pictures to get a few good ones. That’s because I may get pictures of their behinds as they walk away. Or they appear as little more than a blur as they run away from you.
I find some pets are even afraid of the noise a camera makes. One cat I was photographing continually ran as he heard the click of the shutter. There are ways to meet these challenges head on, and I am glad to tackle it. If nothing else, it gets me around animals more, which I love.
It’s fun to see how many pet parents want pictures of their little furry children. Some will dress them up, put them in wagons or chairs. Anything for a cute picture. And because pets are so cute, it’s not hard that once you do get some good shots to make them look cute.
