Sunset Wedding

We had been preparing for this shoot for awhile. It was an outdoor wedding, not all that unusual. But it was by a beach — the bride’s parents’ beach house near Ashland. Beautiful setting. They had set up church pews in the sand and a makeshift alter so that guests were facing the area of the lake where the sun set. The couple scheduled the wedding for 8 p.m. It was still light outside, but the sun was getting lower and lower. This was to be a sunset wedding.

Many of the guests kicked off their shoes and the bride, groom and wedding party went shoeless as they walked through the sand. I even took my sandals off as it was easier walking barefoot in the sand then deal with sand between your shoes and feet.

It was a hot day, in the 90s. We worried about the heat and being outside for so long. Granted, it was hot but by evening when the wedding took place it was quite comfortable. Ashtyn was a gorgeous bride and Scott her handsome groom. It was a picturesque setting and was pulled off brilliantly. I’m sure the couple were a little worried as hints of stormy weather surfaced in the late afternoon, but nothing ever materialized.

Another unusual factor to the wedding. The ceremony was in the middle of the reception. The bride and groom danced with their father and mother before the ceremony, held the dinner before the ceremony, and then got married. The bride-groom dance and cake cutting soon followed.

Who says you have to be traditional at a wedding. It’s the bride and groom’s day. And they made the most of it.
