Welcome to my blog. On this page you will find articles I personally write about the photography industry and my work. You will also see blogs showing the photos from many of my photo sessions.
Continuing education is important in a variety of industries, including photography. As owner of Lori Black Photography, I consider photography education to be one of them.
Ever since I started doing photography professionally, I have believed in continuing education. I haven’t gone back for formal schooling, but I do continue to study the art of photography.
Over the years I have made it my mission to find online classes that speak to me and address an area of photography that interests me. Online classes are how I taught myself to edit photos. They are how I learned to pose and light my photo subjects.
My main source of continuing photography education has been Creative Live. I discovered Creative Live several years ago. I started by purchasing classes I was interested in, and now have a subscription where I can stream all of their classes anytime I want.
Creative Live enlists professional photographers who have a love for teaching and streams lessons live on the Internet. If you can’t watch classes live due to your schedule, you can buy the class to watch at your convenience. I love the new subscription service that gives me access to all their classes whenever I want.
I have taken other online classes as well. These classes have helped me learn so many valuable lessons.
This year I am continuing my online class study, but I am taking it a step further. I am taking part in live in-person education in other parts of the United States.
This next week I am traveling to South Carolina for a wedding photography workshop. My goal is to learn from the other photographers who attend how they do their wedding photography, as well as to get some beautiful images.
Later this month I’m going to Kansas City for a professional lighting class. Included in this class is real-world experience that will give me the opportunity to learn from a master how he uses off-camera strobe lighting to enhance his portraits.
Later this summer, I’m off to a wedding photography workshop in Aspen, Colorado. Again, I’m looking at this as an opportunity to learn from other photographers.
Online classes and in-person training are great ways methods of continuing photography education in my field of business. I can’t say what other photographers in my area do in terms of continuing education, but you can rest assured that it is something I embrace. To me, it means continuing advancement in the field of wedding photography.
