Welcome to my blog. On this page you will find articles I personally write about the photography industry and my work. You will also see blogs showing the photos from many of my photo sessions.
Everyone needs a business headshot — even if you’re not in business.
I realize some people will wonder why they can’t simply take a selfie and use that when they need a photo of themselves. Or maybe people won’t understand why they can’t look through their My Pictures folder on their computer and use any old picture of themselves they can find.
Here are three reasons why you need an updated professional business headshot.
First — to be professional. Everyone should present themselves in a professional manner, even if they are the president of a bank or a ditch digger. No matter what kind of job you have, you need to be professional at it. That means you need to present a photo of yourself that shows you are a professional. Don’t take a selfie or don’t ask your friend to use your iPhone to snap your photo. It will look like your friend took a photo of you with your iPhone. If you want to make an impression on people, you should not showcase your photo as a selfie. Do you have a LinkedIn account? If so you don’t want to post a selfie as that will look extremely unprofessional. If you want to be taken seriously, you want to have a professional photo of yourself up on LinkedIn, your business cards and wherever you are asked for a photo of yourself.
Secondly, perhaps you have a headshot of yourself — taken in 1990. Since then your hair has more gray, your face has more lines and you look more distinguished (let’s hope). That means your headshot needs to be updated. If it’s been a few years, take another. You don’t want people to look at your headshot then look at you and wonder why the two look so different.
Finally, you want to represent your business well. Your headshot can be a representation of your business, so that is why it’s important to have a good one. If you have a bad headshot on your business card or in your marketing materials, that can be a bad reflection of your business. Your business has a brand and your professional business headshot is one ingredient to promote the strength of that brand.
