Have you ever wondered what type of gowns brides wore decades ago?
The P.E.O Chapter GQ wondered that, and decided to let Lincoln know. This past weekend this chapter that promotes education for women put on Unboxed Wedding Memories — a fashion show featuring bridal gowns from 1911 to the future.
Hundreds of people gathered at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church Saturday afternoon to witness this fashion show.
Barb Fitchett, wedding coordinator at St. Mark’s, proposed the style show idea to members of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and a planning committee met for two years to organize the unique fundraiser.
“We are a creative and talented group of women, so Unboxed Wedding Memories soon took on a life of its own,” she said.
The event featured a style show with models wearing 50 heritage wedding gowns from the early 1900s. The dresses were loaned by brides who wore them and family members of those brides. Not all the dresses looked like traditional gowns. Many looked like dresses you could picture women in the early 1900s wearing. But another of the early dresses consisted of an elegant navy blue jacket and skirt. One more recent dress looked like a gown you might see in a Miss America pageant, but it was included in the show because someone wore it as a wedding gown.
Many dresses were fragile. Rips and tears could be seen in some of the more delicate fabrics. Organizers explained that wrinkles were left untouched as high heat could damage the dresses.
The models of the dresses ranged from little girls to grown adults. Many wore dresses that had special meaning to their family.
In addition to the fashion show, a host of businesses set up displays to provide shopping experiences for the guests.
It was an entertaining show that raised a lot of dollars for women’s educational needs. Thanks to the P.E.O. Chapter GQ.
